A spring poem from our own Peggy Maskell:

Hello again, it’s me again                         Oh, what a glorious hue.

I’m sitting on the train again.                    Lambs are playing in the fields

The sun is shining.  Spring is here           Crops are growing, their grain to yield.

Signs of new life are everywhere.            There, see baby rabbits nibbling away

Trees are sprouting leaves of green         While pheasants greet a brand new day.

All nature’s colours can be seen.               How good it is to see the sun

The yellow of the celandine, gorse           And share what nature has begun.

and primroses too                                   The re-awakening of all that's free

In contrast to the bluebells.                        For us to wonder at and see.

Dementia-Friendly Cinema at the Towner:‍

The next film, on Tuesday, 1stApril at 11.00 a.m. is “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy”, starring Renee Zellwigger.  I can highly recommend it!  It will have you both wanting to laugh outloud and reach for your tissues.

As before, carers are free, everyone else is £5.00.  You can book either via the Towner website or at their reception desk on the day (but this can be a bit ofa lengthy process!).  There is plenty of parking nearby – if you have a Blue Badge, there is a dedicated carpark on College Road immediately behind the Towner; otherwise there is free on-road parking locally and the larger “tennis” carpark further up College Road.

Up-date from the Trustees about finances

Many thanks for the feedback regarding the article in the last Newsletter about whether Memory Lane should introduce a minimum charge for each of our sessions (in line with other groups).

However, because there has been a welcome increase in donations recently and we want to keep Memory Lane as inclusive as possible, the Trustees have decided not to bring in a minimum charge, but will keep this under review.

Your donations help towards the costs of professional entertainers as well as refreshments (and lunch at Saturday Club), but there is still a shortfall, so we need to raise additional money.  We would welcome any ideas you may have about what else we can do to raise additional funds. Thank you.

Donations, Grants etc.

Following on from the above, we are also very happy to report having received a grant from the Morrisons Foundation for £2,800.00, which is excellent.  Thank You Morrisons!!

Also, our own Volunteer Liz Cotton has been saving up her winnings from the Monthly Cash Draw and has donated £130.00 back to be used towards the cost of this year’s Intergenerational Opera Project.  Thank you Liz!!

We have also received £96.00 from the Broadway United Church and £95.97 from the Eastbourne Society of Friends.  Thank you both very much.

Friends’ Quiz

Many thanks to everyone who helped or supported the recent Friends of Memory Lane Quiz Night in any way, but especially Sue Parsons and Rose Wattis.  It was a fun evening and Rose’s friend Julie did us proud with yet another set of questions to tax our brains.  A magnificent £606.00 was raised on the night (but we need to deduct £57.00 for the cost of the prizes and the raffle tickets). They hope to hold another in the autumn.

For those of you who don’t know, the Friends of Memory Lane are a group of ex-carers whose loved ones have either gone into permanent care or passed away. Some are also volunteers.  They meet once a month for a pub lunch, organized by Sue Parsons.

Bluebell Walk Cafe

This year, Memory Lane will be running the Bluebell Café at Bates Green Farm, Tye Hill Road, Arlington, BN26 6SH on Thursday, 8th May.

Please support us in any way you can – by volunteering to help on the day, baking some cakes or by turning up for lunch or coffee and a cake.  Please let Deb know if you are able to help.  And,please also pray for late bluebells and lovely weather!!

Monthly Cash Draw:

The winners January winners were:                     The February winners were:

   1st prize £100      Jan Holden                               1stprize £100    Keith Robinson

   2nd prize £40      Keith Robinson                         2nd prize £40    Denise Morgan-Smith

   3rd prize  £25      Denise Morgan-Smith              3rd prize  £25    Sheila Speed

We seem to have some very lucky people here!!  I can assure you that each “ball” is picked by a different person chosen at random in full view of everyone else on our third WednesdaySinging session with Sharon and Paul!!

Do please consider supporting Memory Lane regularly by joining the Monthly Cash Draw.  A minimum of £10 a month secures your own dedicated number; £20 doubles your chances with two dedicated numbers.  We are regulated by the Gambling Act, so half the money raised each month must be paid out in prizes; the other half goes towards funding Memory Lane activities. Please ask Deb or one of the Volunteers for more information.

And finally,

I’d just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone and anyone who helps Memory Lane in any way whatsoever.
